Call for Applications
Institute of Technology and Research, Department of Computer Science,
Heraklion, Crete
We are
looking for 1) post-docs, 2) postgraduate students (at MSc or PhD level), and
3) Computer Science graduates (or engineers) to work for the project PERSIST: How to Compute in Persistent Memory
Systems, which is running at the Foundation for Research and Technology –
Hellas in Crete.
Research
Topic
We are looking for highly motivated applicants with a strong
interest in concurrent and distributed algorithms and data structures. Next
generation computer systems will rely on emerging memory technologies, such as
Non-Volatile Main Memory (NVMM), to address the high computational demands of
modern applications and provide persistence. One research goal of the project
is to build the theoretical underpinning for NVMM-based computing.
Specifically, the project aspires to develop a sound framework that will
facilitate the review of algorithmic techniques for NVMM-based concurrent
computing in a unified way. The project will also focus on designing
fundamental synchronization primitives, and essential concurrent data
structures and algorithms, including indexing structures for big data, and in
particular of data series analytics, whose execution will be recoverable at no
significant cost.
Finances
MSc student net salary 1st-2nd semester: 450-500 euros
Net salary of MSc student in 3rd semester or longer: 600-700 euros.
Net salary of a PhD student: 800 - 1000 euros
The above amounts are given after an employment contract with FORTH ICS and therefore the time of employment is considered pensionable. The salaries of postdocs and graduates who will work on the project, will be determined by the Greek government's formal salary scale.
How to express interest
Those interested should send an email to faturu@csd.uoc.gr, containing the following information:
1) Copies of transcripts (undergraduate and graduate study programs)
2) Curriculum Vitae
Applicants may start a Masters or PhD in the Department of Computer Science of the University of Crete, after following the standard admission process of the Department. Alternatively, they may work at FORTH ICS, while they are registered students in a postgraduate study program of another University.
More information about the positions is available (in greek) here (see also below).

Science (ICS) is one of the leading research centres in Greece with well-organized facilities and highly
qualified staff. It has an internationally acknowledged reputation in
conducting basic and applied research, developing applications and products,
and providing services. It has strong international collaborations, and has
formed several alliances with industrial partners both inside Greece and
internationally. FORTH ICS provides all the required facilities
for a successful career in computer science. It is located at the
relatively-new, modern building of FORTH
which provides all required infrastructure. Some of its facilities include
several computer labs, fully equipped seminar halls, access to auditorium, and

The Beautiful Island of Crete
Living in Crete, the biggest (and one of the most beautiful) island in
Greece, can become an exciting experience. Crete is a multicolored mosaic of
mythology, history, culture, friendly and proud people, rough mountains,
gorges, the always bright Cretan sun and the deep sea that surrounds the
island. In addition to the facilities offered by its big cities, one can really
enjoy the beauty of the landscape and the mountains.
The island offers a wide range of outdoor activities, from mountaineering to all kind of water-sports, to tennis, basketball and football. Rock climbing, paragliding, parapente, parachute, hiking (i.e., through the spectacular Europe's longest Samaria Gorge as well as through many other smaller but well-known gorgeous gorges of the island), mountain bike, all kind of sea sports (from swimming to diving at a wonderful undersea world, to sailing, etc.), cave exploration, as well as a plethora of other activities (like horse riding, participation in local feasts, etc.) are only some of the adventurous choices offered on the island.
Other attractions include the remains of the Minoan civilization at Knossos, as well as a wide collection of other archeological sites of interest, the astonishing Archaeological Museum in Iraklio, picturesque villages spread all around the island, the well-known traditional Cretan food, and the wonderful beaches on the southern side of Crete.
Several beautiful small islands (like Gavdos,
Chrissi, etc.) are very close to Crete and are
popular destinations for one day cruises. Moreover, Crete is just two hours
sailing away from the magnificent island of Santorini (Thira) in Cyclades from
which most of the Cyclades islands can be reached.
