Antonis Argyros (Αντώνης Αργυρός) is a Professor of Computer Science at the Computer Science Department (CSD), University of Crete (UoC) and a researcher at the Institute of Computer Science (ICS), Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH) in Heraklion, Crete, Greece. He received a B.Sc. degree (1989), an M.Sc. degree (1992) and a Ph.D. degree (1996) in Computer Science from CSD-UoC. He has been a postdoctoral fellow at the Computational Vision and Active Perception Laboratory at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden. His current research interests fall in the areas of computer vision and pattern recognition, 3D reconstruction, image motion and tracking, with emphasis on human body pose and shape analysis and recognition of human activities and gestures. He is also interested in applications of computer vision in the fields of robotics and smart environments. In these areas, he has published more than 180 papers in scientific journals and refereed conference proceedings, and has delivered more than 60 invited and keynote talks in international events, universities and research centres.

Antonis Argyros has served as a general co-chair of ECCV'10, as a Program Co-chair of IEEE FG’20, ICVS'19, as a co-organizer of HANDS'15, '17, '18, '19 and ARVW’20, and as an Area Chair/Area Editor/Associate Editor of several editions for top vision, robotics and signal processing conferences (ICCV, ECCV, BMVC, ICPR, ICRA, IROS, EUSIPCO). He serves as a member of the Advisory Board of the IET Image Processing journal and as an Area Editor for the Computer Vision and Image Understanding Journal (CVIU). He serves/has served as a member of the Editorial Board of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters journal and the Computer Animation and Virtual Worlds (CAVW) journal, as a reviewer in more than 35 journals and as a TPC member of more than 70 conferences in computer vision, computer graphics, robotics and related disciplines. He has (co)supervised 31 M.Sc. and Ph.D. students. Currently, he (co)supervises 10 M.Sc. and Ph.D. students as well as 5 postdoctoral researchers. Since 1999, Antonis Argyros he has been involved in more than 30 European and national RTD projects on computer vision, pattern recognition, image analysis and robotics.

In the past, Antonis Argyros has served as a Chairman of the Postgraduate Studies Committee of CSD-UoC, Deputy Chair of the CSD-UoC and Chairman of the Scientific Council of ICS-FORTH. Currently, he serves as a Chair of CSD-UoC, as a member of the Scientific Council of ICS-FORTH, as Chair of the Interdepartmental Committee of the Brain and Mind interdisciplinary graduate program, as Deputy Member of the Board of Directors of the European Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM) and a member of its Strategy Task Group.

New project, I.C.HUMANS

The I.C.HUMANS proposal (UnobtrusIve Capturing of HUman Motion ArticulatioN and Semantics) got funded. I.C.HUMANS was among the 17 proposals that got funded by HFRI (ΕΛΙΔΕΚ) in all scientific disciplines and the only one in the thematic area "Mathematics and Information Sciences".
